If astronauts traveled to Mars, they would be away from Earth for more than a year. What problems do you think being in space would cause? For example, would the astronauts face health problems, and would the equipment be able to remain in space for so long without maintenance? What could be done to address these and other problems?

The cost of completing the ISS (International Space Station) will exceed $60 billion dollars. Do you think that the benefits of this project justify this astronomical cost? If not, how would you recommend this money be spent?

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 252 of 252I think that exersise and food are a problem. I think this because they arent on Earth so they can walk around. All they have is a bike to keep their legs moving. Also a nutricious diet is nessecary because if they dont have a nutricious diet their arteries would clog and they would most likey die in space.:(

Personally, I believe that spending $60 billion is unnecessary. It may be a big process, and it will be very complicated and all to create everything to have access to space and other planets - expecially for an entire year. But I think that the maximum should be (at the most) $10 billion dollars. you might not even get any evidence needed when the trip is over.

I think that $60 billion is not enough to have the most advanced technology. Also to keep the astronauts safe up in space. However, I also think that the ISS should raise money on their own. The maximum amount for a long space trip to Mars should be $75 billion.
I think astronauts will have problems like food shortages. Also they might have something wrong with their skin because Mars has toxic gas and we don't know if are techonlogy is good for Mars. I think these problems can be fixed by having more food and making better suits for the Astronauts.
i believe the hubble website is very interesting because i learned a lot about dark energy, servicing missions, nuts and bolts, and the hubble deep field. it is very fun to learn about our solar system and universe and how to go on space missions.
The hubble website contains very interesting information if you want to know more about planets. It explains how planets are formed, how their hubble telescope works, and also interactive activities that are both educational and fun (in some ways). If you like science and want to research more about what's out there, you will like this website.
i like the website the hubble i loved the pictures of the stars and the gallery was amazinggggg!i think that it is an awesome website theres so much to do i love the photos of the universe! you should check it outtt
We think that if they were in space for more than a year they would start losing oxygen. We also think that they would lose lots of food and they would go hungry. It would also cause them having shortage of supplies. Also,if somebody was sick it would take a long time to travel back to earth because they might not be in the condition they should be in.:D
I like the hubble website because i was very interested about the pictures of the stars and universe. On this website they have pictures and games about everything in space and earth.
The hubble website was all right the black hole journey was cool and it was amazing seeing all those different types of nebulas i even went past URanus
The hubble website is an ineteresting place. It's great when researching on a specific science topic or wanting to play some educational games. Personally, in my opinion, the hubble website wasn't such a great place. During the games, it's more watching than doing. And you know kids these days, they like to be in action and doing something to keep the entertained every minute of the day. Watching demonstrations and examples of how the planets and other in-space objects work and operate can get pretty boring. Great researching website, not such a good website for entertainment.
as the qustion states the amount of money needed to complete iss would be crazy. I think it would be worth it because the amount of info gathered and linking 2 counterys with simalair interests. Both russia and usa will benifit from it as the next step in to space.
i think 60billion dollors is not a lot to create ship to see other galexys.
I think that the problems that they would face that they would become out of shape considering that they would not be using there legs unless they were on the bike which does not do anything to keep them in the shape. The shape they were in before they took off. This would cause a challenge for them when they return. They would not be used to walking.
I think problems would be that when they get back to earth they will have to get used to a new life style again. In space they dont have the medical aides we have on earth. For the equipment some repairs cant be done in space and being up there so long there will have to be some kind of maintnance.
i dont think the astronauts would need maitnance cuz it would take long to get to mars and they werent dirty so i dont think they would get dirty for a long time and they problably clean themselves anyway

i think they should build a bigger ISS so more astronauts could stay there
hi everybody wuzzzzz upp :)
No it is not beneficial to us because even though we are learning more about the universe and people can experience being in space ,there are better uses for 60 billion dollars. I would instead recommend using the money to pay depts that some countries are in and support poor people and spending some money for certain diseases. Also I would reccommend using this money to give jobs lower taxes because with all that money the government can fund retirement costs instead of workers having to give up their pay. Also many countries experience disasters such as the earthquake in Haiti, the disasters in Japan, areas affected by hurricane Sandy, and multiple other disasters and with that money we can help rebuild those areas and save people. Also another concern is our nature and the polution which could also be saved with the funding of that money. The money can also not only support countries in dept but as well as people in dept. Therefore, even though ISS helps us learn new things about the universe but 60 billion dollars world help out the earth and us, wouldn't it?
wazzz upp everybody

I think that if they rare in space for a very long time thier muscles would begin to fade away and get weaker. Because there is zero gravity in space so they do not have to use thier leg muscles becuase they do not walk, they float. And thier arm muscles would get weaker because objects float to they do not have to carry anything. Something to prevent these things from happening is maybe putting a small gym into the space craft. Maybe a weight lifting sort of machine to help thier arm muscles and a bike to workout thier leg muscles. These things might provent thier muscles from dying out.

I think that some problems they might face are that there muscles in their legs would get weaker and weaker. I think that the space equipment would be fine. I think that excersising equipment would be needed to maintain the strength in their bones. Another problem that I think could occur is that they would be unhealthy if they didn't properly clean themselves. A way that they could avoid this is if they took baths instead of showers and slept in things that were weighted and insolated.

hi jenna i hate u
I chose the first problem. I think that astronauts would face a lot of problems if they were in mars for an entire year. One of the problems would be staying clean. Things such as hair cuts and regular showers would become irregular and the astronauts would beocme not used to them. And even if they still excersize thier legs, it would'nt be the same as actually walking around. Also they might miss thier families and favorite foods on earth.

They should continue to build the ISS. The experiments provide us with important info.
i think that astronaut will not really survie unless they bring alot of equiptment and they stay there for under 3 weeks. I also think that60 bliioon dollars isnt enough they should give the 60 billion to me and get more money to do it
i think that umm......they will ummmm.....ok this is what i think tey will they will not stay for a year in spaceeeeee duhhhhhHHH
I like hubble because learn about multuple things in space and have articles and videos teach you about astronomy

Johnny Wund says that using 20 billinn dollars or more money on the international space center is not nessasary. that money could give homeless and dying people food to live their life the fullest
they might not be used to gravity and become physicly disabled or unfit. by jordan mahdi matt tse

They should spend the money onto the U.S or put the money in charity.
Massimo Gallorini
(second)I think they shouldnt spend so much money on the ISS, instead they should spend it on the poor, charity, or something like that. That would be a better way to spend the $60 billion.
Johnathan H.
(second one) I dont think they should waste all that money on the ISS and they should help the economy and help other poor countries. PERIOD
I agree with the second statement because I think that the benefits of this project justify astronaumical cost. I think that the costs should be spent on the astronaumical things. The 60 billion dollars should be spent for the astronauts jobs because then they will have more privallages to work in space,

I think that they could spend the money on the U.S. millatary.

Space would cause some problems to astronauts. The astronauts could have emotional feelings like being homesick. Also, the equipment for the astronauts would cost a lot of money for the ISS as well as the spaceship itself. The astronauts equipment could possibly break down and a way to avoid the problems of that is to bring a spare suit or a couple of spare astronaut suits. Once the astronauts got back to Earth, their walking would feel uncomfortable because of the change of gravity.
they could spend this money buying equipment and devices on their next trip to outer space, for the astronauts to be healthier for a long time such as a year or more.
Astronauts that had been away from Earth for a year would have a lots of problems: they might won't have enough oxygen or food or water in their spaceships. And, if they don't exercise a lot, they would might have bone/joint problems when they go back to Earth. How to solve these problems is to have good exercise equiment and that they don't power out. And the astronauts need to use often to exercise their body. And they need to have a spaceship with good storage so they have enough food for a year. They need to try to have dry meat, dry fruit and dry vegatable, nuts and maybe some energy bars and anyhing else dry and won't spoil so fast. And it's just best they use robots instead of humans in the beginning.
If astronauts traveled to mars there would be problems in health. For example, the russian spaceship that launched recently wasn't living the life. They faced back problems, and barely having the control to walk with no exercise. This will show that traveling to space can be quite troubling even staying there for 1year what could be done is adding some exercise machines for space. and increase the size in a spaceship so they are not crammed.
Obviously astronauts need very well made equipments that last very Long. Thier health would fail without exercising everyday. That means astronauts need very advanced excersising machine. Also the cost of ships would be very high due to al the needs of astronauts living more than one year in space. To attain theis problem, astronauts need to gather as much money as they could so that thier ship could be more advanced and we could explore the mysteries of Mars. Also to make sure no oil leakage happens so that the astronauts stay safe. If astronauts travel to Mars, then they would also need entertainment so they dont suffer from boredism. They would need to bring cards, board games, etc. Astronauts also need lots and lots of food so that they can have a meal everyday. Many problems would face astronauts if they go in space to MArs. So it would be really important to fulfill these needs.
we should spend our money wisley because later on we will be broke and not have money for life-like needs. we should spend at least 1/3 of the money spent for the space station on medicine, food, water. The research is important but our lives are more important. i also thimk it could be spent on schools and keeping the earth clean. this cuncludes my theroy. that is all! :)

Being in space for a year would definetely cause some problems for astronauts. They could possibly get homesick. Or the food that they eat all the time can get sick to them. Has the space shuttle even been tested out to stay in space for so long. What if it just cracks and snaps apart then all of the astronauts wouldn,t be able to live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With $60 billoin dollars this money could be spent for health problems, food, shelter and protection. Some places need more money to survive so instead of using for reaseach, we can be using it for communties that need it.
hello to my classmates :) comment below if u know who it is
i think that the money spent on the ISS space station could be used for other things. Such as medicine, technology, and also helping the poor people by giving them homes, food, and cloths. The 60 billion dollars could be used for that instead of the spacestation.
i think the money that is being spent on the ISS could be helping another things with 60 billion dollars they could help the poor and help anyone in need give them houses and food and anything else they need
i think that when the astronauts go to mars, they will face many issues. They can run out of food and water, and there spaceship may run out of fuel. Also when they are in space, they wont get exercise and they will have health problems. The equipment that will stay long can be the astronaut food and cans of food. To address these problems can be solved by sending another rocket into space with supplies on board.
$60 billion is a big amount and can be used for other uses such as shelter and food, for the people in need.
i think its not a good idea to spend 60 billion dollars on completing the ISS. Instead it could be spent on other things like making new improvements to medecines, probes, a new rocket luanch, etc.
I believe many problems would occur if an astronaut was away from Earth for more than a year. Problems like equipment running out and health issues could be a problem. Besides, being in space without company and barely being able to communicate with others can be stressful and nerve wracking. The only way they could be supported is by finding a way for people to send things up to space for their needs.
Being in space for a year would cause danger and worriedness in your family/ friends. There might be health problems in the astonaut and the equipment could lose its maintenance. What the astonauts should do is, incase of an emergency, have backup suppies (food, water, space gear, etc). You should also have some health suppies such as an enhaler, or some oxegen masks if you need it to help you breath. you should also have your doctor give you medicine, thats prescribed to you so you don't get weak.
